The Dawn Wall follows real climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson as they try to free climb a 3,000 foot wall on El Capitan in Yosemite. Caldwell has spent years planning the route, while Jorgeson must fight through painful falls and damaged fingers. The film also shows Caldwell's past, including a kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan, a serious hand injury, and the end of his marriage to Beth Rodden. The tone is tense and inspiring, with danger on the rock balanced by calm talks about fear, loss, trust, and hard work.
The film treats climbing as a test of patience, skill, and teamwork. It gives special weight to the bond between Caldwell and Jorgeson as they face cold weather, injuries, fear, and the risk of failure. Caldwell reaches key sections before his partner, but he chooses to wait instead of taking the final success alone. The story presents nature, personal pain, friendship, and self-discipline as its main subjects.
