Young Arvin Russell grows up in rough small towns in Ohio and West Virginia after World War II. His family is hit by war trauma, sickness, and hard religion. As he gets older, killers, crooks, and a bad preacher circle closer to him and the people he loves. The movie is dark, violent, and grim.
The story is about evil that spreads through family lines, backwoods crime, and faith used in twisted ways. A father builds a wooden cross in the woods and even kills the family dog as a sacrifice when prayer fails to save his wife. One preacher dumps spiders on himself to prove God protects him, then kills his wife thinking he can raise her from the dead. Another preacher uses church power to take advantage of a teenage girl. A crooked sheriff covers up crimes so he can stay in office. That dark view of church life and local power is easy for a normal viewer to notice, and it sits at the center of the plot.

Western institutional / cultural critique
Church and local power sit at the heart of the pain. Viewers see extreme preachers, prayer that fails, a pastor who preys on a teen, and a sheriff who hides crimes. That is a clear dark take on religion and authority in these towns, told as Southern Gothic horror, not as a modern race or gender politics lecture.

Creator track record context
Lead writers and the director have low stored woke scores and are known for dark character stories and rural grit, not identity activism. Producers mostly score low as well, with only mild general liberal notes on a few names.
