Jamal Khashoggi is a Saudi writer who works for the Washington Post. He walks into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to handle papers for his wedding and never comes out. The film follows his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, and his friend Omar Abdulaziz as they try to learn what happened. It plays like a real-life thriller about a state killing, online propaganda, and a cover-up.
The story focuses on free speech, press freedom, and a government that kills a critic. Viewers see how Saudi trolls flood social media, how activists fight back online, and how Turkish police piece together the murder. The main message is human rights and open speech under a harsh ruler, not race, gender, or queer identity politics. A normal viewer would notice a hard look at power and fear, not a diversity or DEI lecture.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Dissident.
Woke representation / casting
Real people in a true-crime doc, not fictional casting for diversity. Khashoggi, his fiancée, and Omar appear because they lived the events. No quota-style identity casting for roles.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Talk centers on free speech, press safety, and state murder. That is political but classic human-rights talk, not race, gender, or queer activist slogans a viewer would tag as woke dialogue.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Core theme is a regime killing a critic and running online propaganda. Women’s rights may come up as part of reform and human rights, but the story is not built on Western identity politics, race hierarchy, or queer identity.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Saudi power is the main target. The film and related talk also ding big tech, streamers, and money-first geopolitics for looking away. That is light critique of business and power, not a lecture on patriarchy, whiteness, or Western culture as the main villain.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not present in this title.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear anti-woke or right-leaning wave calling the film DEI propaganda. Controversy was about Saudi pressure, distribution fear, and review trolling, not “too woke” complaints.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached scores for Fogel, Swantko, and Halvorssen are 0; Monroe is 9. Together they point to free-speech and human-rights work, not a pattern of identity-driven woke projects.
