Aaron Falk is a federal police agent who returns to Kiewarra, the dry farming town where he grew up. He comes home for the funeral of his old friend Luke, who appears to have killed his wife and young son before killing himself. Luke’s parents ask Aaron to look again at the case, while the town still blames Aaron for the death of Ellie, a teenage girl, many years earlier. The film moves between past and present as Aaron faces old lies, angry neighbors, family pain, and a dangerous fire.
The clearest identity-related moment comes when the film reveals that two local men had a hidden gay relationship. The secret helps explain where one local man was during the old case and helps Aaron sort out the mystery. The film treats the relationship as a private fact in a small town, not as a speech about rights or identity. The main themes are guilt, abuse, grief, drought, debt, and the harm caused when a community hides the truth.

Identity-driven story themes
The film reveals that two local men had a hidden gay relationship. The reveal helps explain one man’s alibi during the old case. The story treats the relationship as a private secret, not as a lesson about LGBTQ rights or identity. The subplot is brief and does not shape Aaron’s main journey.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows drought, bushfire danger, and money pressure in the farm town. The story hints that large farming companies can hurt small farms. These problems shape the setting and some character motives. The film does not turn them into a modern activist speech about government, capitalism, or identity.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adapts a recent original novel without identity-driven or DEI-style alterations to characters or source material.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No notable anti-woke or right-leaning complaints in coverage or public discussion accusing the film of pushing woke, DEI, or identity politics messaging. Reception centered on its value as an atmospheric mystery thriller.

Creator track record context
Robert Connolly has a record of political and social films about corporate power, war, and the environment. He describes The Dry as a story about regional Australia, life on the land, and a man’s return to his past. Jane Harper’s saved profile shows no clear activist or identity-driven pattern. Bruna Papandrea and Jodi Matterson have backed women-centered and diversity work in the industry, but this film is not built around that message.
