Julie is a middle-aged filmmaker who takes her elderly mother, Rosalind, to a hotel in the Welsh countryside. The hotel was once the family home where Rosalind stayed as a child. Julie wants to make a film about her mother, but old memories, guilt, and strange sounds make the visit tense. The quiet ghost story uses fog, empty rooms, polite talk, and long silences to build a sad and uneasy mood.
The film keeps its attention on two women and gives their mother-daughter bond almost all of the emotional weight. Julie feels pressure because she has no children, while Rosalind calls Julie’s care for her a kind of motherhood. Their talks show how work, family duty, and old ideas about women can pull against each other. These ideas matter to the story, but the film presents them as private grief and family pain rather than as a modern political campaign.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Eternal Daughter.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The two main roles are a mother and daughter, so their gender fits the story. The Black hotel worker is a small supporting role, and the film does not frame the cast as a diversity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters discuss family, grief, work, memory, and motherhood. The film contains no modern activist, DEI, or identity-politics speech.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film gives nearly all of its emotional weight to a mother and daughter. The story makes Julie’s lack of children and her work as a filmmaker part of repeated talks about what makes her life meaningful. Rosalind calls Julie’s care for her a kind of motherhood. These ideas are central, but the film presents them as private family pain rather than a public cause.
34%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows Julie feeling guilty that she has no children and worries that she has failed her mother. The story puts pressure on old family ideas about women, marriage, and motherhood. The film does not attack men, religion, government, or Western society. The criticism stays personal and quiet rather than activist.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film continues Julie and Rosalind from The Souvenir films. Their ages and performers change because of the time jump, but no character receives a race, gender, or sexuality change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X pass found no anti-woke reaction. Web and audience sources showed ordinary complaints about slow pacing, weak scares, and unclear genre marketing instead.

Creator track record context
Joanna Hogg’s work often centers women’s inner lives, family, art, class, and power. She has spoken about sexism and the lack of women directors. Producer Emma Norton has supported projects tied to women’s creative work, while the other listed creators have little public identity-politics history. The film’s female-centered family story fits Hogg’s repeated pattern, so the creator context is meaningful even though the movie itself is quiet.
