The Kid Detective follows Abe Applebaum, a former child detective who once solved small crimes in Willowbrook. At 31, he still runs a failing detective office while drinking, using drugs, and blaming himself for a girl who vanished when he was young. A high-school student hires him to find who killed her boyfriend, and Abe sees a chance to repair his name. The movie starts like a bright children’s mystery, then becomes a grim crime story about guilt, lost innocence, and the cost of growing up.
The film includes a few visible identity-related jokes and remarks. Abe mentions a gay client who wanted to know if another man was gay, and another scene has a girl call herself racist after making an assumption about an Asian boy. Abe also uses sexist and homophobic language as part of his crude adult persona. These moments are brief and are not the film’s main subject, since the story stays focused on murder, abuse, regret, and Abe’s failure to leave childhood behind.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Kid Detective.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film does not show a representation-first casting pattern in its main roles. The modern Canadian setting includes different ethnic backgrounds without turning them into a message about identity.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film has a brief race-related remark when Caroline calls herself racist after assuming an Asian boy sent her a gift. Abe mentions a gay client who wanted to know whether another man was gay. These lines use identity language, but the movie has no political speech or activist argument.
10%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The main story follows murder, child abuse, guilt, and lost innocence. Race, sex, and queer identity do not drive the case or Abe’s character arc.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows adults, police, and a school leader failing children, but it treats those failures as parts of the crime plot. It does not turn them into a modern activist attack on patriarchy, capitalism, Christianity, or family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story inspired by child detective fiction. It does not change an established character, historical figure, or known canon for identity reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research pass found no anti-woke reaction to the film. The reviewed coverage shows no clear complaint that the film pushes DEI, identity politics, or left-wing messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
Evan Morgan has no recorded activist, DEI, or identity-politics pattern. Ashley Hallihan has publicly stressed diversity and underrepresentation in film. Several producers have limited credits on queer-centered or black-led films, but most listed creators have low or no such context. The film itself does not match that material with activist themes or marketing.
