Operation Avalanche follows Matt Johnson, a young CIA agent who wants to become a famous spy and filmmaker. In 1967, Matt and Owen Williams pose as a documentary crew inside NASA while they search for a Soviet spy. They learn that the planned moon lander may not work well enough to meet President Kennedy’s deadline. Matt then pushes the CIA to fake the moon landing, and the playful spy story turns into a dark thriller about lies, fear, and ambition.
The agents use old cameras, borrowed film, and movie tricks to build a landing that looks real. The pressure comes from the Cold War, the space race, and the fear that America will lose its public image. Matt treats film as a tool that can make a false event look real, while Owen worries about the cost of the plan. The story shows government secrecy, media control, betrayal, and the damage caused by Matt’s need to be important. Its jokes, real NASA footage, and sudden violence create a strange mix of comedy, mystery, and suspense.
