Andrew Appelle

Personal context

Summary

Andrew Appelle is a Canadian filmmaker from Thunder Bay who works across directing, cinematography, editing and writing. He contributed cinematography to Matt Johnson’s Operation Avalanche and co-wrote, shot and edited the comedy series Nirvanna the Band the Show, earning Canadian Screen Award nominations for writing. His visual work also includes Steven Kostanski’s Psycho Goreman and the fantasy feature Deathstalker, alongside documentary and television directing. Appelle has directed and photographed multiple projects about professional wrestling and later worked on documentary series focused on unusual, tragic and subcultural subjects, including heavy metal. A stated interest in people living on society’s fringes and in stories shaped by corporate greed gives his work a social-observational edge, but the available public record does not show sustained political activism, DEI advocacy or a recurring identity-politics persona.
