Mike McCann is a North Dakota truck driver who looks after his younger brother, Gurty, an Iraq veteran with PTSD and aphasia. After a diamond mine collapses in northern Manitoba, 26 miners are trapped underground with little oxygen left. Mike joins Jim Goldenrod, Tantoo, and another driver to haul rescue equipment across melting ice roads before the route breaks apart. The film has a cold, tense action tone, but it also uses family loyalty, danger, and rough humor to keep the mission moving.
Tantoo is a Cree truck driver whose brother is trapped in the mine, and she is also jailed after protesting white control of Native land. Her role gives the story a clear identity-driven thread because she talks about native rights, faces racist comments, and proves herself in a group led mostly by men. The film also criticizes a mining company that hides unsafe choices and puts profit above workers, while Mike attacks the drugging of wounded veterans. These ideas matter to several character scenes, but the rescue drive, company sabotage, and survival action remain the main story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Ice Road.
Woke representation / casting
Tantoo is a young Cree woman who drives one of the three rescue trucks and is a major team member. Goldenrod is a black trucker who helps lead the mission. The story gives Tantoo a local backstory through her brother in the mine and her protests, so her casting has a clear story reason. The pattern is still visible because a native woman and a black man hold prominent heroic roles, but the film centers Mike and uses only one major female team member.
29%
Woke political dialogue
The film gives Mike a speech about the VA giving opioids to wounded veterans. Tantoo says she will keep protesting until white people leave Native land. The film also uses racist remarks from a company agent and shows managers discussing unsafe work and a cover-up. These points recur in the setup and the rescue conflict, but most dialogue stays on trucks, danger, and saving miners.
35%
Identity-driven story themes
Tantoo's native identity and activism shape why she is arrested and why she joins the rescue. The film treats white control of Native land and racist assumptions about her as wrong. Her brother's being trapped in the mine makes the identity conflict part of her personal story. The theme matters in several early scenes and returns during the rescue, but family duty and survival remain more important.
35%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The mining company hides unsafe decisions and plans to cover up the deaths of the miners. The story presents company managers as willing to kill workers to protect profit. Mike also attacks the way the VA treats Gurty with drugs instead of care. These criticisms are clear, but the rescue mission and family bond stay at the center.
31%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about fictional truckers, miners, and company workers. It is influenced by older action films, but it does not change an established character, canon, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small X accounts called the film “woke garbage,” “woke shit,” or “typical lefty crap.” One small account quit early and complained about an “SJW activist,” while an online review accused the film of trying to appease a woke crowd. The posts had little reach, and no major right-leaning figure, outlet, boycott, or review-bombing effort appeared. Most public discussion focused on weak CGI, plot holes, and ordinary action-film quality.

Creator track record context
Jonathan Hensleigh has a mild record of action films that sometimes include social comments. Mary Vernieu has spoken about representation and diverse role models. The other listed casting directors and producers have mostly low stored scores, with mild social context from Jonathan Dana and Shivani Rawat. The overall creator context is mild rather than a strong activist pattern.
