Solène is a forty year old divorced gallery owner in Los Angeles. She falls in love with Hayes, a twenty four year old star from a boy band. Their romance drives the first part of the story. Later the film shows harsh public judgment and unfair media treatment of their age gap. It asks whether a mother can want love and happiness without being punished for it.
The film clearly talks about sexism and age bias against older women with younger men. Friends and on screen media call out double standards and online hate. The story centers on female desire, motherhood, and unfair social rules more than race or queer identity. These ideas show up in the plot itself, not only in marketing talk. The message is soft gender politics, and public claims that the movie is too woke stayed thin.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Idea of You.
Woke representation / casting
The modern LA and global-pop setting shows multiracial band members and mixed supporting roles in a way that feels natural to that world. The white leads match the novel’s white heroes. Casting was not sold as a diversity milestone. Some left-leaning coverage even said the film reduced book characters of color, which works against a quota-forward reading. The small score only reflects a light contemporary diverse ensemble feel in secondary parts.

Woke political dialogue
Dialogue and on-screen media openly name misogyny, ageism, and the double standard for older woman and younger man couples. Lines about cougars, online pile-ons, and people hating happy women put soft feminist points in the audience’s ear. Hayes is also framed as a kind feminist. This is not race or queer activist speech, but it rises well above background chatter.

Identity-driven story themes
The main conflict is built around gender norms, middle-aged female sexuality, motherhood versus personal desire, and unequal judgment of age-gap romance when the woman is older. Author and press talk about ageism, sexism, and the mom stereotype, and the second half makes that hard to miss. It is still a romance fantasy first and not a race or queer identity project.
55%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film targets media, social media, and cultural double standards that police women’s desirability and a mother’s right to her own life. Bandmate casualness and a cheating ex add light male failure texture. It does not attack capitalism, Christianity, or whiteness as institutions. The critique stays in a glossy rom-com register about social norms.

Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Changes such as aging Hayes up, aging Izzy up, a happier reunion, and a smaller career path are ordinary adaptation choices. The source already centered white leads, and the film did not race-swap or gender-swap the heroes for identity politics. Whitewashing of supporting characters of color is a left-side adaptation complaint, not a progressive upgrade of canon.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
There was no sustained mainstream campaign calling the film too woke, DEI, or propaganda. Most talk was about the age gap, book versus film quality, and left-side complaints about whitewashing. Only sparse low-signal grumbling treated it as feminist messaging, so right-leaning backlash evidence is thin.
5%
Creator track record context
Cached context mixes higher progressive or activist signals such as Gabrielle Union and Bernard Telsey’s casting-office DEI commitments with mid to lower scores for Hathaway, Westfeldt, Showalter, Lee, and others. The team is not uniformly activist. This title’s content fits soft gender liberalism more than hard identity politics.
