Laura is a New York writer and mother who feels lonely and unsure about her marriage. Her husband, Dean, travels often for his technology business, and Laura starts to think he may be seeing a co-worker. Laura asks her rich, charming father Felix for help, and he turns the worry into a spying mission. The story moves through Manhattan bars, clubs, cars, and homes before taking Laura and Felix to Mexico. The tone is light, stylish, and often funny, but it also shows sadness under the jokes.
Felix keeps saying that men are built to cheat, and he tells Laura to think like a man. The movie presents his ideas as old-fashioned and often wrong, while Laura questions his view of women and marriage. It also shows how his past cheating hurt Laura’s mother and shaped Laura’s fear of being left. The main message is about trust, family habits, money, and the need for Laura to make her own choices.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for On the Rocks.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film shows an interracial family in modern New York, but it does not make race or representation part of the plot. The casting is not presented as a diversity message.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Felix says that men are naturally drawn to younger women and may be unable to stay faithful. He says women were once treated as men’s property and tells Laura to think like a man. Laura rejects his excuses and says his cheating hurt her mother. This gender-focused talk recurs through family arguments, but it does not become a wider activist speech.
24%
Identity-driven story themes
Laura’s central struggle includes feeling erased by motherhood, marriage, and her stalled writing. The film connects that feeling to Felix’s belief that male cheating is natural and that he can control her choices. Laura rejects his control and makes her own judgment. These gender themes are noticeable, but they stay personal rather than becoming a wider identity campaign.
24%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Felix repeatedly treats male cheating and control as normal. Laura pushes back when he tells her to think like a man. The film links his old views to the damage he caused Laura’s mother and to Laura’s fear of marriage. A traffic stop shows his wealth and contacts helping him avoid a ticket, but the criticism stays personal rather than attacking a wider institution.
35%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film tells an original story about Laura, Felix, and Dean. It does not change an established character, canon, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research found no anti-woke complaints. Other audience reactions focused on story quality, pacing, and the ending.

Creator track record context
Sofia Coppola’s wider work often centers on women’s experiences and the female perspective. She described this film as a father-daughter story about a woman’s changing identity and the clash between men and women. Her interviews focus on family, relationships, and New York, not activist or diversity goals. The listed creative team has no strong recorded activist track record.
