J.B. Mooney is an unemployed husband and father in a quiet Massachusetts suburb in 1970. He borrows money from his mother and hires small-time thieves to steal four paintings from a local museum. The robbery quickly falls apart, and J.B. leaves his angry wife and sons while he runs from police and other criminals. The movie uses slow scenes, dry humor, and a sad tone to show his weak planning and growing loneliness.
The Vietnam War stays at the edge of J.B.'s life through news reports, posters, talk of draft dodgers, and street protests. J.B. laughs at the idea of hiding with people who fled the draft, then enters an anti-war rally only to escape arrest. The story also shows how his search for freedom makes his wife, mother, and female friend carry the cost of his choices. These gender and anti-war ideas shape the film's meaning, but the crime story and J.B.'s selfish fall remain the main focus.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Mastermind.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast is mostly white, and the central family and friends fit a 1970 Massachusetts suburb. A few black and Latino men appear in small crime roles, but the movie does not build a staged diversity pattern or promote them as identity symbols.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Television and radio reports repeatedly cover Vietnam, campus protests, and people feeling powerless. A college activist says teachers who protest can face punishment. J.B. mocks the idea of living with draft dodgers in a Canadian commune. The political talk stays in the background until police break up an anti-war rally in the final scene.
29%
Identity-driven story themes
J.B.'s search for freedom repeatedly leaves women to carry the cost. Terri earns money, cares for their sons, and handles the damage while he steals and runs. His mother funds him, and Maude sees through his plan and orders him out before he harms her family. The story uses these three women to frame his behavior as male entitlement, though they remain supporting characters.
39%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie turns a charming male thief into an unskilled and selfish husband who expects women to rescue him. J.B. treats family duty as a burden and calls his crime a gift to his family, but the story shows that claim as false. The film also treats his lone-wolf freedom as empty beside family duty and group action. The critique recurs, but it does not attack marriage, Christianity, or Western society as a whole.
38%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie tells an original story that is only loosely inspired by a real museum robbery. It does not change an established character or real person for identity reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Public complaints focused on slow pacing, a long ladder scene, and the lack of a usual heist payoff. No clear anti-woke, DEI, identity-politics, or left-wing backlash was found.

Creator track record context
Writer-director Kelly Reichardt has a cached creator score of 41 and is the main creative voice. Her work often studies people on society's edges, but she says she does not make films with an activist plan. Producer Efe Çakarel has a cached 39 tied to MUBI's support for queer and global films. The other cached casting and producer scores are mostly low, from 0 to 26.
