The Medium follows Nim, a woman who serves as a shaman in a rural part of Isan, northeast Thailand. A small documentary crew records her work with Ba Yan, a local goddess who is said to guide her family. Nim’s niece Mink begins to act strangely after a death in the family, and the family first believes that Mink is being chosen to carry on the role. The film begins as a quiet village mystery and slowly turns into bleak, violent possession horror.
The film’s clearest identity-driven feature is the female line of spiritual leaders at the center of the story. Nim is shown as a quiet and sincere guide, while a flashy male shaman uses rough methods and admits that parts of his show are for money. This contrast questions old ideas about who should hold power, but it stays inside Thai belief, family guilt, and possession horror. The main themes are faith, inherited blame, family duty, and the fear that no ritual can stop the evil.
