The Meg is a PG-13 giant shark thriller made as a United States and China co-production. Rescue diver Jonas Taylor is pulled back into deep-sea work after a research team under Chinese oceanographer Dr. Minway Zhang and his daughter Suyin is trapped in the Mariana Trench. A roughly seventy-five-foot megalodon escapes into open water. The plot follows trauma, rescue, a beach attack, and the mission to kill the shark. It plays as a commercial creature feature built around action and survival.
The film includes a Chinese scientist co-lead, a multiethnic research crew, a brief anti-shark-finning moment, and a greedy billionaire villain. Suyin is shown as a capable co-hero beside the male lead. The core story still centers on the megalodon threat, Jonas's past trauma, rescue, and survival rather than identity politics or activist speeches. What viewers mainly see is a fun shark blockbuster with light environmental and greed notes, not a message-driven identity story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Meg.
Woke representation / casting
The film is set in modern international research waters and is a China co-production, so Chinese co-leads fit the story. The crew is clearly multiethnic in major roles, and Suyin is a strong co-hero next to Statham. The director also said in press that the international cast was an intentional diversity choice, not just an accident of the setting.
30%
Woke political dialogue
There is almost no political speech about identity or modern activism. Characters show disgust at shark-finning boats and at a selfish funder. That is brief and small, not a set of activist lectures.
5%
Identity-driven story themes
The main story is the megalodon threat, Jonas's past trauma, rescue, and survival. Family and romance appear, and there is a light environmental beat about finning. Identity politics and queer storylines do not drive the plot.
5%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The billionaire funder lies, chases status, and dies, and the finners get payback. That is plain greed and cruelty. It is not a long attack on Western institutions, patriarchy, whiteness, family norms, or Christianity.
8%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Book characters shift from Japanese Tanaka line to Chinese Zhang and Suyin mainly for co-production and China market access. Other changes are ordinary adaptation choices, not identity-driven rewrites of legacy Western figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No notable right-leaning or anti-woke campaign treated the film as forced diversity, an agenda piece, or propaganda. Talk stayed on B-movie fun, quality, and box office.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached profiles are mostly low. Turteltaub shows mild progressive cultural engagement, including support for diverse casting. Writers and producers look like mainstream commercial names with little activist record, which matches a fun blockbuster plus one diversity-focused director interview.
