Ashley Davis is a Broadway dancer who loses her job after the Jingle Belles decide she is too old for the troupe. She returns to Sycamore Creek for Christmas and finds that her parents may lose the Rhythm Room, a small music club that shaped her childhood. Ashley uses her dance skills to build a shirtless male revue with Luke, a local handyman, her brother-in-law Rodger, and other town men. The plan brings in crowds, but Ashley must choose between a better job in New York and the family, friends, and new love she finds at home. The film uses bright holiday shows, gentle jokes, and a simple romance.
The clearest woke-coded material comes from the role reversal at the center of the story. Ashley is the skilled leader, teacher, and choreographer, while the men become the visual attraction for cheering women. The film speaks against age-based treatment of women when Ashley is pushed out of her old job and includes a joke that women do not need men to be happy. These ideas shape the whole plot, but the ending weakens the career message because Ashley turns down a large New York offer and stays in town with Luke. The story stays focused on love, family, work, and community instead of modern political arguments, race debates, or queer themes.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Merry Gentlemen.
Woke representation / casting
Ashley is the main dancer, choreographer, and boss of an all-male revue. The movie makes the men the shirtless visual attraction for a mostly female crowd. The supporting cast includes some black and Latino characters, but no title-specific interview or marketing statement frames that mix as a diversity campaign. The gender-role choice gives the film a mild casting signal.
24%
Woke political dialogue
The film opens with Ashley losing her job because the show wants younger dancers. Ashley’s sister jokes that women no longer need a man to be happy and adds that women can vote now. The movie repeats the age and career issue in Ashley’s talks with her family and Luke. The dialogue stays in a few scenes instead of becoming a full political speech.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
Ashley drives the main plan, trains the men, corrects their moves, and takes charge when Luke refuses to lead the final show. The women in town become the main audience for the men’s bodies, which flips the usual direction of a holiday romance. The story treats female desire and a woman’s work skills as normal and useful. The ending makes the career message mixed because Ashley leaves a better New York job to stay with Luke and her family.
44%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film criticizes the Jingle Belles for replacing Ashley with a younger dancer. Ashley’s sister mocks the old idea that women need men, and Ashley later says her work should not define her whole life. The story favors a local family venue over a juice bar chain, but it treats that as a small-town business problem. The movie does not attack churches, family life, or Western institutions.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original Christmas romance with no established characters, source story, or real historical event to change.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X research pass found no anti-woke reaction. Online comments and reviews focused on the movie’s quality, shirtless dancing, and ending instead of woke, DEI, or identity politics claims.

Creator track record context
The supplied creator scores for the listed people range from 5 to 19. Peter Sullivan has a past disability-related story connection. Jeffrey Schenck and Barry Barnholtz are linked to Hybrid’s support for women directors and co-producers. Marla Sokoloff and Brian Nolan have little public activist context. The overall record is mild rather than strongly ideological.
