Alex Dall is a college freshman who joins her school’s women’s rowing team. She becomes obsessed with being the best and reaching the top boat. The film is set at a university and feels tense and dark, more like a mind thriller than a feel-good sports movie. Alex hurts her body, her grades, and her friendships to win.
The clearest woke-facing element is queer content that a normal viewer can see. Alex is written as a queer young woman. She dates Dani, a woman, and the film shows their romance and a sex scene. Official listings and ads often call her a “queer college freshman,” and the movie played big LGBTQ festivals. The main story is still about unhealthy obsession and sports pain, not about coming out or fighting bigots. There is little activist talk, no big lectures about race or gender, and no known anti-woke backlash. Viewers who care about identity themes will notice the lesbian subplot and the queer framing; the core plot stays about drive and self-harm.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Novice.
Woke representation / casting
Women’s rowing cast fits the setting. Lead Alex is written and sold as queer. Her romance is with Dani (Dilone), a black lesbian character. Queer casting is clear and intentional (love interest was rewritten from male to female). Race is not the main signal; queer inclusion is. Not a full DEI quota stack across every role.
52%
Woke political dialogue
Almost no activist or identity-politics speeches. Conflict is about ranking, effort, and team friction. One class dig (“silver spoon student”) is brief and not a social-justice monologue.
5%
Identity-driven story themes
Core theme is self-made obsession and sports pain. Queer identity is real on screen: lesbian romance, intimacy, and “queer freshman” framing. That subplot is easy to notice but is not a coming-out or oppression story. Identity is present and marketed, not the main engine of the plot.
58%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Does not attack Christianity, the West, or “the system” in modern activist terms. Shows harsh team culture and a short class jab. Women drive the drama; it is not a sermon about toxic masculinity or patriarchy as the message.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Original story, not an adaptation of known characters or history.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
No clear anti-woke or right-leaning campaign treating the film as DEI or agenda propaganda. Coverage is mostly critical praise and queer-media celebration.
0%
Creator track record context
Director is a queer Outfest-linked filmmaker (32) who frames the work as write-what-you-know, not a message film. One producer stresses DEI hiring (28). Other listed producers score 0. Overall mild-to-moderate context, not a hard activist slate.
