Forrest Tucker is an aging bank robber who enjoys the craft more than the money. In 1981 Texas and nearby states, he and two older partners rob banks with calm manners, fake names, and very little violence. Detective John Hunt follows the gang while trying to keep his own home life steady. Forrest also starts a romance with Jewel, a horse rancher who does not know his full past. The film is gentle, funny, and wistful rather than harsh.
The main cast includes Danny Glover as Teddy, one of Forrest's real-life partners, and Tika Sumpter as Hunt's wife in a supporting role. Their parts stay tied to the crime plot and Hunt's family life. Forrest's charm makes bank robbery look playful, while the story also shows prison, broken trust, and the cost of leaving people behind. The main themes are aging, freedom, loyalty, regret, and the wish to keep doing the one thing that makes life feel alive.

These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Old Man & the Gun.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek lead a crime story set in 1981 Texas and the Southwest. Danny Glover and Tika Sumpter have supporting roles that fit the story's real people and family setting. The film does not present the casting as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on bank jobs, prison escapes, aging, marriage, and police work. The script has no recurring talk about modern identity politics, DEI, gender roles, or activist causes.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Forrest's story is about crime, aging, freedom, romance, and regret. The film does not build its main conflict around race, gender, sexuality, or present-day social activism.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The police and FBI pursue Forrest, but that conflict stays within a standard crime story. The film does not attack modern Western institutions, family life, Christianity, or traditional social norms.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes parts of the true story, including Jewel's background and the timing of events. Those changes shape the romance and crime plot, not anyone's race, gender, or sexuality.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The separate X check found no anti-woke reaction, and wider searches found no clear title-specific complaints that the film pushes woke or DEI ideas. The main negative review criticized the film's treatment of white male privilege, which was a left-side complaint.

Creator track record context
David Lowery's cached score is 12/100, and David Grann's is 20/100. Robert Redford's cached score is 29/100 because of environmental and native American advocacy. Julie Goldstein's cached score is 54/100 because of identity-focused films such as Freeheld and Belle. The wider creator group has mostly low cached scores, and the film itself does not reflect a strong activist pattern.
