The movie follows Randy Bradley, a quiet young man who works at a small fast food restaurant. Randy watches his coworker Benson kill several people after a bully pushes Randy too far. Benson takes Randy on a drive through their small Louisiana town and nearby roads. The tense and bloody trip forces Randy to face an old school accident, a broken relationship, and the fear that has shaped his life.
The movie gives its strongest social message to ideas about masculinity. Randy hides his feelings and accepts abuse, while Benson treats anger, control, and violence as ways to make Randy stronger. The story shows that Benson’s violent lesson is harmful, even though Randy gains courage by finally speaking up and asking for help. Benson also attacks malls as symbols of corporate greed in one clear speech, but the film does not make race, LGBTQ identity, or diversity part of the story.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Passenger.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The movie has a small mixed supporting cast, but its main roles are two white male coworkers. No story, marketing, or interview frames the casting as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Benson gives one clear speech that treats the mall as a symbol of corporate greed and wasteful buying. The speech is a direct anti-corporate message, but it lasts only a short time and does not lead to a political plan or movement. The rest of the dialogue deals with trauma, family, sex, bullying, and personal choices.
14%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie centers on two young men whose trauma shapes how they act. Randy hides his feelings and accepts abuse, while Benson uses anger, control, and violence as his idea of strength. The story treats that model of manhood as harmful and gives Randy a better path when he speaks up and seeks help. This theme runs through the whole trip, but it stays focused on personal trauma rather than race, sexuality, or a wider identity campaign.
32%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The story shows failures in several everyday places, including a fast food workplace, a school, a family home, and a mall. Male bullying, a controlling parent, a school tied to childhood harm, and Benson’s belief that violence can fix a weak man are shown as harmful. Benson also attacks consumer culture, but the film does not make a broad attack on Christianity, conservative politics, or Western society.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The movie is an original story about Randy and Benson. It does not change a known character, canon, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No clear anti-woke backlash appears in the reviewed public discussion. Viewers and critics mainly discussed the violence, performances, trauma, unclear motives, and the male bond.
0%
Creator track record context
Director Carter Smith has a strong queer-focused track record, including queer horror and public discussion of queer representation. Writer Jack Stanley has no strong public record of activist or identity-driven work. The producers and casting director have mostly mainstream records with only mild political or identity signals. This high context score comes mainly from Smith and does not mean that The Passenger is a queer story.
