The Perfect Date follows Brooks Rattigan, a smart high school senior in Bridgeport, Connecticut, who wants to attend Yale. His father cannot pay the full cost, so Brooks accepts money to act as a fake boyfriend and then works with his best friend Murph to build an app for paid dates. Brooks soon lies about his class and changes his behavior to win Shelby, a wealthy classmate, while Celia, his first customer, helps him see the damage caused by his act. The movie uses a light teen-romance tone, with jokes, school dances, friendship trouble, and a final lesson about honesty.
The clearest identity element is Murph, who is presented as a gay black teen and has a crush on a male customer. The film treats his sexuality as normal and gives him a friendly, positive place in the group, but his story stays small and does not control the main romance. Camila Mendes plays a major love interest, and the main cast shows some modern diversity without making identity politics part of the plot. Most of the message concerns class, money, status, and the need to stop pretending, rather than current activist ideas.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Perfect Date.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film places a black best friend and a Latina love interest in a present-day American high school. The story treats these choices as ordinary parts of the group and does not frame the casting as a diversity goal.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters discuss college, money, romance, and status. The movie has no recurring dialogue about current identity politics, DEI, or activism.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Murph is presented as a gay teen and has a crush on a male customer. The film treats his sexuality as ordinary and gives him a few positive moments with Brooks and the other teens. This material is recurring but stays in a small side story while Brooks’s fake-date business and romance drive the movie.
18%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Brooks compares his working-class family with wealthy classmates and worries about Yale’s cost. The movie treats that conflict as a personal class and college problem, not as a modern activist attack on Western institutions, men, family, or religion.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adapts Steve Bloom’s novel The Stand-In, but it is not part of an older franchise or a story about a real person. The title change to The Perfect Date is a marketing change, not an identity-driven rewrite.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Available coverage shows no notable complaint that the film pushes woke, DEI, or identity politics. Reviewers mostly argued about the weak plot, clichés, class story, and romance.
0%
Creator track record context
Not present. Public background for Chris Nelson, Steve Bloom, and Randall Green shows commercial comedy and screen work with no clear activist or identity-driven record. The stored producer and casting profiles add no strong woke signal.
