In the summer of 2003, twelve-year-old Ben arrives late at a boys' water polo camp where the teams and friendships already exist. He wants the approval of Jake, the small but powerful leader, while Eli sits outside the group because of his rash and strange behavior. The boys call Eli's skin problem “the plague,” and Ben joins the joke even as he feels sorry for him. When Ben develops a rash of his own, fear, guilt, and the wish to belong pull him into a dark fight. The film uses pools, locker rooms, and empty camp halls to create a tense, grim mood.
The movie presents boyhood as a place where toughness, sex talk, and fear of weakness help a cruel group grow. It shows an adult coach who gives advice but cannot protect the boys, so peer power rules the camp. Ben's story shows how a kind child can hurt another child when he fears losing his place. The film keeps its social message on bullying, male group pressure, and the cost of fitting in.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Plague.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The camp has a mixed group of boys, but the story does not make race, gender, or diversity part of its message. The casting focus is on believable camp behavior and age.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The boys talk about camp life, sex, fear, and the fake plague. The film has no activist, political, or identity-focused speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The film's target is marked by a skin rash, odd behavior, and camp status. The story presents this as a cruel boyhood rumor, not as a modern race, sex, sexuality, or identity campaign.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The boys build a cruel pecking order around toughness, sex talk, and fear of looking weak. The coach sees the harm but mostly fails to stop it. The film repeatedly shows “boys will be boys” as a cover for cruelty. The story keeps this criticism inside one camp instead of turning it into a broad attack on Western institutions or current politics.
27%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about camp boys, so it does not change an established character, source, or real historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction, and broader coverage did not show complaints that the film pushes DEI, identity politics, or left-wing activism. Public discussion is about bullying, style, and the ending.
0%
Creator track record context
Charlie Polinger has no known activist record, and the film comes from his personal camp memories. The listed producers have low cached creator scores and no strong pattern of identity politics or activist branding. Their title-related interviews focus on boyhood, bullying, and the pressure to fit in. This gives the title a low creator track record context score.
