Ingrid is a successful writer in New York who fears death. She reconnects with Martha, an old magazine friend and former war reporter who has terminal cancer. Martha asks Ingrid to stay nearby at a modern house in upstate New York while she plans to take a pill to end her life. Ingrid must face her fear, the law, and the pain of losing someone she once knew well. The film uses bright colors, quiet rooms, dry jokes, books, old movies, and sad talks to create a gentle but uneasy mood.
The film gives Martha control over the time and manner of her death, and it presents her choice as a matter of dignity and personal freedom. Ingrid gradually accepts the request and treats Martha’s decision with care, even though the police treat the act as a crime. A former lover warns that the health system and the law will not protect them, while he also blames climate change, market-first politics, and the far right for a dying world. Martha also talks about being one of the few women war reporters and about failing as a mother, but the story stays focused on death, friendship, and learning how to live through grief.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Room Next Door.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film puts two white American women in the lead roles because the story centers on these friends. The supporting roles do not create an obvious identity-based group.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Damian gives an extended talk about climate change, the far right, market-first politics, and the failing health system. Martha and Ingrid discuss the pressure to treat cancer as a battle and the right to choose death. Ingrid rejects Damian’s hopelessness, but the film still gives these views clear space. The political talk appears in several scenes, while most dialogue stays on friendship, illness, and art.
52%
Identity-driven story themes
The film centers two older women whose choices drive the main story. Martha controls her plan to end her life, and Ingrid chooses to stand beside her. The women are successful in their work, while the main male figures warn, judge, or need help. Martha also talks about being one of the few women war reporters and about failing as a mother. The story strongly values female agency, but it remains mainly about death, friendship, and grief.
53%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows New York law as cruel because Ingrid must act like a criminal after Martha’s death. The police officer calls the choice a crime and is later described as a religious fanatic. Damian blames market-first politics, the far right, and a failing health system for a dying world. The film also challenges the idea that patients must fight cancer to prove their worth. These critiques return around the euthanasia plot, but they do not replace the friendship story.
58%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film adapts Sigrid Nunez’s novel, but it is not a franchise or historical retelling. No identity-related rewrite of an established character or real figure is reported.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X research pass found no anti-woke complaints. Scattered audience comments criticized the film’s political asides, but no sustained anti-woke campaign or major complaint cycle was reported.

Creator track record context
Pedro Almodóvar’s stored creator score is 76, and his career often centers women, queer identity, sexual freedom, and resistance to religious or patriarchal authority. His title interviews directly support euthanasia choice and link the film to climate danger. Esther García and Agustín Almodóvar also have stored records tied to queer-inclusive and women-centered films. Sigrid Nunez’s stored score is 31, which lowers the wider team signal, but Almodóvar remains the main creative voice.
