David Cuevas is a husband and father who collects protection money for a Los Angeles crime boss. He works with Creeper, a feared enforcer, while trying to keep his home life separate from the violence. When Conejo, an old rival of the boss, returns from Mexico, he attacks the gang's power and targets David's family. The film has a grim and bloody tone, with crime, torture, shootings, and threats against children.
The main identity-related element is the cast, which is mostly Latino with black actors also appearing in the South Los Angeles gang world. That mix fits the setting, but Shia LaBeouf plays a white character who grew up in Mexican American street culture, creating a visible casting question. The story centers on loyalty, faith, family, and the price of a violent life. Women are placed in danger to raise the men's stakes, but the movie does not turn that pattern into a repeated lesson about race, gender, or sexuality.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Tax Collector.
Woke representation / casting
The cast is mostly Latino, with black actors also present, and that fits the South Los Angeles setting. Shia LaBeouf plays Creeper as a white man raised in Mexican American street culture, which creates a visible identity question. David Ayer also spoke about hiring people of color and multicultural representation around the film. The story does not make race a central lesson, so this remains a mild factor.
