Tickled is a New Zealand documentary about entertainment reporter David Farrier finding online videos of young athletic men in competitive endurance tickling. He asks Jane O'Brien Media for an interview and gets a hostile, homophobic reply that refuses to work with a homosexual journalist and adds legal threats. That overreaction pulls Farrier and co-director Dylan Reeve into a multi-year investigation of deception, blackmail, doxxing, and control. Former participants describe recruitment, pressure, and retaliation, including videos and personal details leaked to schools, employers, and family. The filmmakers trace the operation through aliases to wealthy U.S. figure David D'Amato, confront him, and face ongoing legal threats, with a follow-up special covering later confrontations and lawsuits.
For most viewers the main story is power, money, and internet harassment rather than a social justice lecture. Homophobia and homoerotic subtext are real, on-screen parts of the story. They trigger the investigation, explain the blackmail leverage, and contrast Jane O'Brien Media's denials with open fetish producer Richard Ivey. Threats and emails use gay-shaming as a weapon, and shame around sexuality appears more strongly there than as a lecture from the film itself. Farrier has said he wished the film spoke more directly about queer shaming, but the finished film stays mainly an investigative true-crime thriller.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Tickled.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Real people in a real investigation with no engineered diversity casting. Farrier's sexuality is his own and becomes plot-relevant only because the operators attack him for it.
0%
Woke political dialogue
The film shows the operators' homophobic emails and gay-shaming threats as evidence of abuse. There is little progressive speechifying or modern activist slogans. Most talk is investigative and confrontational. It is not built from identity-politics monologues.
14%
Identity-driven story themes
LGBTQ-linked material is clear on screen and active in the story. Viewers see homoerotic tickling sold as sport, strong anti-gay attacks on bisexual Farrier, blackmail that uses fear of being labeled gay, and openly gay fetish producer Richard Ivey who is honest about desire. That is more than a side detail. Still, the main shape is an expose of one man's power, control, and online bullying, so most people experience a true-crime oddity thriller first.
48%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The critique targets one wealthy person's abuse, legal intimidation, and internet harassment. It is not a broad attack on Western institutions, capitalism as an idea, the church, or traditional family. Notes about conservative backgrounds making some recruits easier to blackmail stay secondary to personal power abuse.
12%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. This is an original documentary about real events, not an adaptation rewriting fictional characters or historical figures for identity reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No substantial anti-woke campaign treats Tickled as DEI, woke propaganda, or identity-agenda cinema. Controversy is almost entirely the subject's lawsuits, discrediting campaigns, and premiere confrontations.
0%
Creator track record context
Farrier is the on-screen lead and co-director, a bisexual journalist whose work is more curiosity-driven than activist. Reeve has a low profile. Producers show a mild-to-moderate progressive lean, including inequality-doc and gay-rights liberal backgrounds, without a strong activist identity for this title.
