Tim and Millie are a long-term couple who leave city life for a small town in the country. Millie takes a teaching job while Tim struggles with his music career and fears that the move will erase his freedom. After Tim drinks water in a strange cave, an unseen force pulls their bodies together and makes their private problems physical. The film mixes romance, dark jokes, and graphic body horror as the couple fights to stay separate or become one.
Jamie, a gay neighbor, tells Millie about his husband, and a wedding video shows the two men joined into one body. The final form of Tim and Millie has mixed male and female features, which makes gender and personal identity visible in the ending. These ideas give the film a clear queer and identity-focused layer, but the story uses them to explore love, fear, and codependency. The film keeps its attention on the couple and their strange fate instead of turning the story into a political speech.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Together.
Woke representation / casting
Millie is the capable schoolteacher and main provider, while Tim is a struggling musician who cannot drive and depends on her. The film also gives Jamie a male husband and shows their same-sex wedding before revealing their fusion. These choices create a visible gender and queer representation pattern in the main relationship and supporting plot. The choices serve the relationship plot and do not look like a diversity-first cast lineup.
28%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. No activist, social-justice, or ideological dialogue; conversations stay on personal fears, relationship tensions, and the cult's fusion ideas as horror metaphor.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The film turns fear of losing the self in a relationship into bodies that physically merge. Jamie's gay marriage makes the fusion idea part of a queer relationship too. The ending presents a mixed-gender body with an unclear single identity. The story treats these ideas as a strange form of love and codependency, not as a campaign about current identity politics.
45%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present in this title.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Original screenplay with no established source material, canon, or historical figures altered for ideological reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Reddit commenter called the film an LGBTQ-pandering project and pointed to the gay wedding reveal and the mixed-gender final figure. The supplied X research found no anti-woke complaints, boycott, review-bombing, or organized campaign. News coverage instead focused on the copyright lawsuit and the Chinese edit of the gay scene, so the anti-woke reaction was fringe and very small.
10%
Creator track record context
Michael Shanks has no known activist or identity-driven record. Alison Brie has supported gay rights and other liberal causes. Dave Franco and the other listed producers have no notable activist pattern. This gives the film a small creator track record context signal, but interviews about Together focus on love, fear, and body horror.
