Bear is a shy music-store worker who cannot tell his longtime friend Nikki that he loves her. He breaks a strange One Wish Willow and wishes that she will love him more than anyone else. Nikki’s sudden love soon turns into stalking, violence, and murder. The movie mixes awkward humor with bloody horror as Bear learns that his selfish wish has trapped the real Nikki inside her own body. The clearest modern theme is a woman losing control over her body and choices because a man wants her love. Bear sees signs that Nikki is suffering, but he accepts the false relationship until the danger becomes impossible to ignore. The story often treats his behavior as selfish, weak, and harmful, yet it keeps the focus on these people instead of blaming all men. Nikki becomes the stronger and scarier figure, but she is a victim of the curse rather than a girlboss hero.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Obsession.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. Lead casting pairs a white male protagonist with a Mexican-American actress as his childhood crush and coworker in a story-logical setup; no marketing emphasis on identity, quotas, or diversity signaling.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present in this title.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Bear takes away Nikki’s freedom by wishing that she will love him. The real Nikki remains trapped while a false version controls her body. Bear learns the truth but keeps accepting the relationship because it gives him what he wants. The consent theme drives most of the horror, though the story treats it as one selfish man’s failure instead of a claim about all men.
20%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie repeatedly criticizes Bear’s selfish “nice guy” behavior and his belief that he deserves Nikki’s love. Bear’s weakness and refusal to face the truth cause much of the harm. The story links his romantic wish to male entitlement, but it does not attack family, religion, law, or Western society. The criticism stays focused on modern dating behavior and one troubled man.
15%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Original story with no legacy characters, source material, or historical figures altered for ideological reasons.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Several X and Reddit users said the movie unfairly attacks men or turns male desire into something evil. One X complaint gained about 780 likes, while most related claims came from small accounts. No major news outlet made these complaints a story of their own. Much louder right-leaning reaction praised the movie as not woke, which does not count as backlash.

Creator track record context
Curry Barker’s stored record shows little political or identity-based work. Most producers have low stored scores and careers built around commercial horror, action, and thrillers. Jason Blum has made some liberal comments and supported inclusion efforts. His record is a mild signal, but the main creative team does not show a strong activist pattern.
