Together Together follows Anna, a lonely young woman in San Francisco who agrees to carry a baby for Matt, a single man in his forties. Anna wants money for college after a painful teenage pregnancy, while Matt hopes fatherhood will end years of loneliness. Their deal brings them together for doctor visits, birth classes, shopping trips, and hard talks about limits. The film uses dry jokes and gentle sadness as a business arrangement grows into a close but non-romantic friendship.
The story gives a central place to surrogacy, single parenthood, and a family formed outside marriage. Anna pushes back when Matt tries to control her food, sex life, or pregnancy, and the film treats her body and choices as her own. The film also questions the old idea that an older man should pair with a younger woman and rejects sex or marriage as the only proper happy ending. A gay coffee-shop worker adds a small LGBTQ element, while Patti Harrison’s casting as a trans actress playing a pregnant woman adds a visible identity choice around the movie even though Anna’s gender history is never part of the plot.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Together Together.
Woke representation / casting
The film is set in modern San Francisco, so its mixed supporting cast does not by itself stand out as forced representation. Patti Harrison is a trans actress playing Anna as a woman who is not presented as trans in the lead role. Entertainment coverage and Harrison’s interviews made that casting choice visible as trans representation even though the story never explains Anna as trans. The role is important, but the film does not build several main roles around identity casting.

Woke political dialogue
The film gives Anna several short lines about gender and romance. She challenges Matt when he tries to control her pregnancy and when a store worker praises single fatherhood more than single motherhood. She also attacks films that normalize older men dating much younger women. These moments recur in separate scenes, but the film has no long political speech.

Identity-driven story themes
The movie makes nontraditional family formation central to the story. Anna carries a baby for a single man, wants education after a teenage pregnancy, and keeps control over her own choices. Both characters accept a deep bond that does not become sex, marriage, or a standard romance. These ideas drive the plot from the job interview to the birth, but the film does not turn them into a broad activist campaign.
57%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film shows a shop worker reacting warmly to Matt as a single father but sadly to Anna as a single mother. Anna calls out that double standard. The film mocks the old idea that an older man should pair with a younger woman and treats that romance pattern as harmful. The story also presents single fatherhood, surrogacy, and a non-romantic bond as valid alternatives to marriage.
42%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story with no established characters, canon, or historical figures to change. Its new family arrangement is part of the premise rather than a rewrite of older material.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A few small X accounts objected to the film using Patti Harrison, a trans actress, to play the pregnant surrogate. One called the film a peak example of “woke times,” and another joked that anti-trans feminists would object to the pregnancy. The supplied X pass found no boycott, review-bombing, large right-leaning outlet, or wider campaign, so the backlash is fringe.

Creator track record context
Director Nikole Beckwith has a repeated interest in gender, family structure, reproductive roles, and people outside normal expectations. Her earlier work supports that pattern, while Together Together directly continues it. Several producers also have records of supporting gender, queer, race, abortion, or other social themes, although many others have mainstream or non-political profiles. The film’s own interviews also frame it around feminist filmmaking, male parenthood, and different kinds of love.
