Samuel lives a carefree life on the coast of southern France, where he spends his days around boats, parties, and little responsibility. A woman from his past leaves him with baby Gloria, so he travels to London to return her and ends up raising her there alone. Eight years later, Samuel works as a stuntman and shares a bright, playful home with Gloria, who has grown close to him. When Gloria’s mother returns and asks for custody, the comedy turns into a painful family drama about truth, illness, and loss.
The film builds its family around daily love rather than a normal two-parent home. Samuel becomes the main parent even though he starts as an immature man and later learns that he may not be Gloria’s biological father. Bernie, Samuel’s openly gay friend, helps raise Gloria and takes a parent-like place beside them. The story treats this unusual family with warmth, but its strongest message is that care, time, and honesty can shape a family more deeply than birth ties.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Two Is a Family.
Woke representation / casting
Samuel is a Black French lead, and Gloria is a mixed-race girl in a major role. Bernie is an openly gay film producer who becomes part of the family. The story takes place in modern southern France and London, so these choices are believable for the setting. The choices show a visible identity pattern, but the film does not turn race or diversity into its main subject.
30%
Woke political dialogue
Bernie makes a few jokes about men being gay and says he is a little like Gloria’s mother because he helps raise her. Samuel says that nothing replaces a mother, while Bernie answers that he is more of a mother to Gloria. These lines bring sexuality and gender roles into the dialogue, but they stay inside jokes and family arguments instead of becoming a political speech.
25%
Identity-driven story themes
Samuel raises Gloria alone, and the film treats daily care as more important than a biological tie. Bernie is openly gay and becomes a caring uncle and parent-like member of their home. The story presents this unusual family as warm and workable through years of shared life. These themes are important, but the movie stays mainly focused on fatherhood, honesty, illness, and loss.
40%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film gives the main parenting role to a single father and lets his gay friend act as a caring parent-like adult. The story treats this family arrangement as better for Gloria than the birth mother’s first attempt at parenting. That is a mild challenge to traditional family roles, but the movie does not attack courts, religion, or Western culture.
15%
Woke character or canon changes
The film is a loose French remake of the Mexican movie Instructions Not Included. The earlier story follows Valentin, a Mexican father played by Eugenio Derbez, while this film follows Samuel, a Black French father played by Omar Sy. Those race and national identity changes are central to the remake, but the film mainly relocates the family story instead of adding identity politics.
24%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No sustained anti-woke complaints, boycott, or review campaign was found for this film. Public criticism mainly targets the long runtime, emotional ending, weak court plot, or the gay character’s stereotype, so it does not show anti-woke backlash.
0%
Creator track record context
The supplied creator records are mostly commercial comedy, family drama, and popular television. Eugenio Derbez, Guillermo Ríos, and Leticia López Margalli have stronger patterns of Latino representation or women-centered social stories in their wider work. Gélin’s press notes say he wanted a strong gay man in Bernie and a family built around care. This gives the film some identity-focused context, but the creators did not market the movie as an activist project.
