Vesper is a 13-year-old girl caring for her paralyzed father after failed genetic experiments ruin Earth's food supply. Rich Citadels control seeds that grow only once, while families outside trade blood and labor to survive. Vesper uses a small lab and knowledge she taught herself to make better living things, but her harsh uncle Jonas wants to control her. Her rescue of Camellia, a woman from a crashed Citadel ship, gives her a dangerous chance to change the food system.
The story puts two capable young women at the center and makes their support for each other the key to freedom. Jonas treats Vesper as a future breeder, and Citadel rules treat the lab-made Camellia as property that must obey a master. Vesper fights both forms of control and learns how to make the Citadels' seeds fertile for everyone. The film uses this fight to attack private control of food, cruel male power, and a rich ruling class, but it does not focus on race, sexuality, or party politics.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Vesper.
Woke representation / casting
Vesper is a gifted 13-year-old girl who teaches herself advanced plant science and becomes the person who can save the food supply. Camellia is the second major woman, and the two women drive the plot while the main adult men are disabled, dead, cruel, or controlling. Vesper still makes mistakes and needs help, so her skill does not feel effortless. The strong female pattern is clear, but the cast is otherwise mostly White and the story does not build a broad diversity mix.
38%
Woke political dialogue
Characters repeatedly say the rich Citadels control seeds, raise prices, and keep poor people dependent. Vesper says she wants fertile seeds so no one will starve, and Jonas defends the existing order while using his sons' blood for trade. Jonas also talks about making Vesper a breeder, and he tells Camellia that a lab-made woman needs a master. The lines stay inside the future setting, but they carry clear class and female freedom messages.
48%
Identity-driven story themes
Vesper and Camellia both face rules that reduce women to obedient property. Jonas wants Vesper to become one of his breeders, while the Citadel treats Camellia as a thing that must serve a male owner. The two women help each other resist those roles, and their bond unlocks the seed plan that drives the ending. The film makes female freedom central, but it does not turn the story into a broad attack on all men or focus on race or LGBTQ identity.
62%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Citadels are a rich ruling class that owns living things and makes poor people buy new seeds after every harvest. The system also treats lab-made people as property and sends armed men to protect its control. Jonas copies this order by trading his sons' blood and demanding women who obey him. Vesper's final act gives fertile seeds away, so the story clearly favors shared survival over private control and male rule.
72%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Vesper is an original story. It does not change an older character, source, or real person.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No clear anti-woke campaign or major complaint about DEI or identity politics was found. Negative viewer comments focused on the slow pace, thin characters, bleak tone, or unclear story.
