Waiting for the Barbarians follows an unnamed magistrate who runs a quiet frontier post for a distant empire. He expects to retire peacefully until Colonel Joll arrives to investigate rumors of an attack by local nomads. Joll uses beatings, torture, and fear to force a story from prisoners. The magistrate helps a badly hurt young woman return to her people, and the choice brings punishment. The film has a slow, grim, and often disturbing tone.
The film makes colonial rule and state violence central to its story. It shows officials inventing an enemy, calling local people barbarians, and treating their pain as proof of guilt. The magistrate sees that his quiet life depends on the same empire that harms the locals. The story also shows his limits because he wants to help the woman but still acts like a powerful outsider. The film is a broad warning about fear, cruelty, and leaders who create threats to keep control.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Waiting for the Barbarians.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The film casts European actors as Empire officials and Mongolian performers as local nomads. These choices fit the story’s fictional frontier setting and are not framed as a diversity campaign.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The film includes lines about torture, fear, empire, and the false threat of the barbarians. The dialogue does not use modern DEI, gender, or activist language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Colonel Joll repeatedly labels local nomads as barbarians and uses torture to create a false enemy. The Magistrate slowly rejects the Empire’s treatment of people who live outside its control. The story treats colonial rule, fear of outsiders, and state violence as serious wrongs. The film uses a broad anti-colonial allegory, but it does not turn the plot into a current race, gender, or DEI campaign.
42%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The Empire’s officials and army are shown as a cruel system that invents danger and rewards torture. Colonel Joll’s security campaign turns fear into arrests, violence, and war. The Magistrate’s moral break comes from seeing the system harm local people and himself. This is a strong attack on colonial and state institutions, but it is not a repeated attack on modern family life, Christianity, or ordinary conservative social rules.
45%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film changes the novel’s structure and ending, but those changes concern plot and pacing. It does not change a known character’s race, gender, or sexuality.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One Rotten Tomatoes audience review called the film an “anti-white movie” made by “extreme leftists.” That comment treats the film’s colonial criticism as left-wing messaging, but it is only one audience comment. The separate X research found no anti-woke reaction, and no broad title-specific backlash was found.
8%
Creator track record context
Ciro Guerra has a repeated focus on native communities, colonial encounters, and voices left out of mainstream stories. Olga Segura-Gall has a strong record of supporting Latino and other underrepresented creators. J.M. Coetzee often writes about colonial power and human rights, but his public profile is less tied to modern DEI campaigns. Other listed creators have mixed public records on these issues. This gives a moderate context signal, but it does not prove that every scene carries an activist message.
