War follows Major Kabir Dhaliwal, an Indian spy who suddenly turns against his own agency. Captain Khalid Rahmani, the young soldier Kabir trained, must hunt him across India, Europe and the Arctic. Khalid faces the task while carrying the shame of his father's betrayal and a weakness in his eyesight. The movie uses fast chases, large fights, songs, romance, and surprise identity changes to create a glossy and very patriotic action tone.
The story makes Khalid's Muslim identity part of his struggle to prove that he belongs to India. His mother's prayers, his father's treason, and his final sacrifice tie religion, family, and national loyalty together. The movie also gives a female intelligence analyst, a female defence minister, and a female surgeon skilled jobs, but the two male spies still control the story and action. Kabir and Khalid share love jokes and charged looks, yet the film never confirms a queer relationship.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for War.
Woke representation / casting
The film puts a Muslim Indian soldier, Khalid, in one of its two leading roles. The team also includes Aditi, a highly capable female intelligence analyst, while a woman serves as defence minister and another woman is a top plastic surgeon. These choices make minority and female competence visible, but the movie gives no diversity-first casting message. The roles fit a modern Indian spy setting, and the male stars still control the action, so the representation signal stays mild.
20%
Woke political dialogue
The film repeatedly makes Khalid answer for his father's treason and his loyalty to India. Khalid says his mother's sacrifice shows where his loyalty comes from. Kabir's boss jokes that Khalid loves Kabir, and Khalid answers that he loves his country more. The ending calls Khalid the true hero after his sacrifice. The words connect faith, family, and national belonging, but they stay tied to the spy plot.
30%
Identity-driven story themes
The film presents Khalid as a Muslim through his name, his mother's prayers, and his refusal to drink alcohol for religious reasons. Kabir first rejects him because his father betrayed the country, and Khalid must keep proving that he is loyal. The story gives this struggle a clear ending when Khalid dies saving the mission and receives a state honor. Naina also says ordinary people fight to give their children a simple life, which adds a smaller social message. Most of the movie still follows spy missions, betrayals, and big fights, so the identity theme is important but not the whole movie.
43%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows moles inside RAW and a rogue agent outside the chain of command. It does not attack Western institutions, Christianity, family life, or male roles through modern activist messaging.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film uses original spy characters and does not change known characters, canon, or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Right-leaning posts accuse the film of mocking Hindu beliefs while treating Khalid as the truest patriot. Gems of Bollywood published the claim, and X accounts repeated it years later with some reach. The complaint never became a 2019 boycott, review-bomb, or wide news cycle, so the backlash was real but limited.
38%
Creator track record context
The cached director summary describes Siddharth Anand as a commercial filmmaker focused on action, romance, and patriotic spectacle. The cached writer and producer summaries show mainly crime, spy, and mainstream production work without a clear activist record. Aditya Chopra and YRF add some representation-oriented context through women-centered and socially framed films. The casting summaries also show professional work without a clear identity campaign. This gives War mild creator track record context because the film itself is mainly a patriotic action thriller.
