William Tell follows a quiet hunter in 14th-century Switzerland. William has returned from the Crusades with painful memories and wants to protect his wife and son. Austrian rulers seize Swiss land and punish anyone who refuses to kneel. Tell is pulled into a bloody fight when Governor Gessler forces him to shoot an apple above his son’s head.
The movie gives Tell a Muslim wife from Palestine and a mixed-heritage son, so identity becomes part of his family and his reason to fight. It also presents Catholic priest Fürst as a non-white fighter who speaks Arabic and mixes Christian and Middle Eastern images. Suna, Gertrude, and Bertha repeatedly fight beside the men, and Suna helps push the rebels into action. These choices are clear and important, but the main story remains a freedom struggle about family, war, and resistance to foreign rule.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for William Tell.
Woke representation / casting
The movie puts several identity choices in prominent roles. Tell’s Muslim Palestinian wife and mixed-heritage son become part of the main family, while Catholic priest Fürst is played as a non-white fighter who speaks Arabic. Suna, Gertrude, and Bertha also fight in repeated battle scenes instead of staying only in support roles. These choices show a clear diversity and female empowerment pattern, but the story gives Suna a backstory that explains why she came to Switzerland.
45%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters speak about liberty, war, and resistance to Austrian rule. The movie does not use modern identity, DEI, or activist language in its political speeches.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The movie makes Suna’s Muslim and Palestinian background part of the message about who belongs in the Swiss resistance. Suna speaks Arabic with Fürst and gives the rebel meeting its final push. Three women join repeated fights and are treated as important to the victory. The story still centers on family, liberty, and war rather than a modern identity campaign.
38%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The movie shows men telling women to know their place and saying that women cannot help in battle. Suna, Gertrude, and Bertha answer those views by leading or joining attacks. The repeated contrast treats old gender roles as wrong and female fighters as equal to the men. The movie does not attack Christianity, capitalism, or family life, and its anti-tyranny plot is historical.
30%
Woke character or canon changes
The film changes Tell’s usual Swiss wife Hedwig into Suna, a Muslim woman from Palestine whom he meets during the Crusades. The son becomes mixed-heritage, and Fürst becomes a non-white Catholic priest with Arab and Christian elements. The movie also turns women who were mostly advisers in Schiller’s play into fighters. These identity-driven changes affect the family and resistance plot in major ways.
56%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Several X accounts attacked the film as a woke or anti-white rewrite of a Swiss national story. Posts objected to Suna’s Middle Eastern identity, the mixed-heritage son, Fürst’s casting, and women fighting in battle. A widely seen post from Martin Sellner drew about 107,000 views, 6,000 likes, and 1,000 reposts, while Arturo Pérez-Reverte also called the film woke in a widely reported post. The reaction was scattered, with no organized boycott or clear review-bomb campaign.

Creator track record context
Nick Hamm has a mild record tied to peace and political dialogue, but no strong DEI pattern is documented. Friedrich Schiller’s freedom themes are classical anti-tyranny ideas rather than modern identity politics. Casting director Avy Kaufman has worked on projects with major LGBTQ+ themes, while most other cached crew scores are low. The creator record adds a light signal, but it is weaker than the movie’s visible casting and story changes.
