Alejandro G. Iñárritu

Personal context

Summary

Mexican director, writer, and producer whose career repeatedly engages with migration, displacement, class inequality, violence, and cultural identity. His films Amores perros, 21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful, and Birdman often connect personal crises to broader social or economic systems, while Flesh and Sand used immersive virtual reality to foreground the experiences of undocumented migrants. Iñárritu has publicly condemned xenophobia, Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric, border-wall policies, and what he described as cruelty toward migrants. He has also spoken about diversity at the Oscars and challenged narrow racial framing in Hollywood, while emphasizing the importance of Mexican and broader international voices in cinema. His work is not primarily partisan or activist in every instance, and he has also directed conventional commercial projects such as The Revenant, but immigration, transnational identity, inequality, and opposition to nationalist exclusion recur across both his creative output and public persona.
