Alice Lowe

Personal context

Summary

Alice Lowe is an English actor, comedian, writer and director known for surreal comedy work including Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and Sightseers, and for the independent features Prevenge and Timestalker. Her work often gives darkly comic, flawed women unusual agency, including in stories about motherhood, desire and violence. Lowe has repeatedly spoken about sexism in comedy and filmmaking, unequal opportunities for women directors, and restrictive expectations that female filmmakers tell a prescribed version of women’s experience; she has also discussed the challenges of combining filmmaking with caring responsibilities. No public statements on party politics, race-focused advocacy, or LGBTQ advocacy are on record.
