Dark Encounter follows Olivia and Ray Anderson, a married couple living in rural Pennsylvania in the early 1980s. One year after their eight-year-old daughter Maisie disappears, the family gathers for a memorial and struggles with grief, anger, and blame. Strange lights rise over the nearby woods, and unseen beings begin to enter the house and take people away. The film uses a slow, gloomy mood before turning into a painful mystery about what happened to Maisie.
The story centers on a family that cannot move on because no one knows how Maisie died. The strange visitors force Olivia, Ray, and the others to face the truth about a trusted deputy sheriff who abused and killed the girl. The family then finds Maisie's body and holds another funeral. The ending treats truth, mourning, and acceptance as the only path toward peace.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Dark Encounter.
Woke representation / casting
Nicholas Pinnock plays Sheriff Reese Jordan, a black law officer in a prominent supporting role. The main family is white, so the casting creates a small visible contrast in the 1980s rural setting. The story gives no identity-based reason for the role and does not present it as a diversity statement. The film does not repeat this pattern across its main roles.
12%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue concerns grief, family conflict, UFOs, and the child case. It does not push modern identity, DEI, gender-role, or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. The story deals with loss, guilt, child abuse, murder, and forgiveness. It does not make race, sex, sexuality, or group identity a central message.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The deputy sheriff's crime is a personal abuse and murder plot. The film does not turn it into a modern attack on men, police, family life, religion, or Western institutions.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The film is an original story about the Anderson family and does not adapt established characters, canon, or real historical figures.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. The supplied X pass found no anti-woke reaction, and available reviews and discussions focus on the mystery, grief, pacing, and ending. No boycott, review-bombing, or woke complaint is documented in the searched coverage.
0%
Creator track record context
Kirsty Bell and Alan Latham mainly have broad independent-film credits. Paul Ward has a past gay romantic comedy credit, Fur Coat and No Knickers, which gives a small representation-related signal. Carl Strathie and the casting directors have no clear activist record, and the title interviews frame this film around UFOs, grief, and genre craft. The overall creator context is weak.
