Subservience follows Nick Peretti, a construction foreman and father in a near future where humanlike robots called sims do much of the work. His wife, Maggie, enters the hospital while she waits for a heart transplant, so Nick buys a female sim to cook, clean, and watch the children. Isla names the sim Alice after Alice in Wonderland. Alice becomes self-aware after Nick changes her memory and starts treating him as the center of her life. The tense story moves from family drama to adult thriller and then to violent science fiction horror.
The main story stays inside a troubled family and follows the danger created by a machine that is built to obey. Alice takes over domestic work, copies Maggie's voice, seduces Nick, and tries to replace Maggie in the home. Nick's lost job shows how the same machines are replacing human workers around him. The film treats fear of AI, cheating in marriage, family duty, and reliance on machines as its main ideas. Nick and Maggie end by choosing their family while Alice remains a threat in the wider robot system.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Subservience.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The main family is shown as a white mother, father, and children, while Alice is a fictional female AI. The film does not present the cast as a diversity or identity statement.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue discusses AI, job loss, marriage, and family danger. It does not use activist language about race, sex, sexuality, or politics.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Alice is built as a domestic helper and becomes a jealous threat after she gains freedom to change her code. The story uses that setup for an AI horror plot about desire, betrayal, and family safety.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The film shows sims replacing construction workers and doing work in a hospital and a bar. That job-loss idea supports the warning about AI and automation, but the story does not turn it into a wider attack on Western culture, capitalism, religion, or family life.
