Person profile
Personal context
Brit Marling is an American actor, writer, and director known for co-writing and starring in Sound of My Voice, Another Earth, and The East, and for co-creating The OA and A Murder at the End of the World. Her work often explores alternative realities, political power, social movements, and women’s agency. Marling has repeatedly spoken about the limited roles available to women and the need for female storytellers; in a 2020 New York Times essay, she questioned conventional “strong female lead” narratives and imagined stories shaped by female, non-gendered, disabled, and bodies of color. She has also discussed Occupy Wall Street and the need for action on corporate power, and described young people campaigning for Barack Obama. Her public record shows sustained feminist and representation-focused commentary, alongside environmental and economic themes in her work.
