2023 · Based on 1 season, 7 episodes through December 19, 2023 ·
Darby Hart is a young hacker and amateur detective who writes about cold cases involving murdered women. A reclusive tech billionaire invites her and eight other guests to a remote hotel in Iceland, where her former boyfriend Bill is killed. Darby searches the locked-down retreat for the killer while the story moves between the murder and her earlier road trip with Bill. The show mixes a tense mystery with romance, grief, climate fear, and worries about powerful technology.
The show repeatedly presents Darby as a gifted young woman whose ideas are doubted because of her age and gender. It also follows women in high-status roles, including a famous hacker, a doctor who went to the moon, and a tech leader, while Darby is shown as queer even though her main romance is with Bill. The story links unsolved murders of women, male violence, climate danger, billionaire power, and technology that watches people. These themes recur across the season and shape the mystery, but the show remains mainly a character mystery rather than a direct political drama.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for A Murder at the End of the World.
Woke representation / casting
The show puts a young hacker named Darby at the center and gives several women elite jobs and skills. Lee is a famous hacker, Sian is the first woman to walk on the moon, and Lu Mei leads a major technology company. The creators frame Darby as a young female detective who must be taken seriously. The future global retreat makes the varied guest list plausible, so the score reflects the repeated pattern and identity framing rather than a clear setting mismatch.
36%
Woke political dialogue
Andy talks about climate danger and the need for powerful people to save humanity. Bill connects the murders of women to a broken society that keeps producing killers. Darby and Lee discuss harassment, male violence, and the harm caused by powerful technology. Ray’s final storyline turns flawed AI data and market-driven technology into the season’s clearest political message.
42%
Identity-driven story themes
Darby solves cases about women whom authorities failed to protect. The show treats her doubt, grief, and growth as part of a story about women being ignored and harmed by men. The show presents Darby as queer even though her main love story is with Bill. The season links gendered violence to the way powerful men and technology control other people.
47%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The story presents tech billionaires and private retreats as dangerous places where power hides behind good promises. Andy uses AI, cameras, and a private empire to protect himself while claiming to save the world. Darby and Bill point to authorities that ignore women killed in unsolved cases. The criticism of tech power, market systems, male entitlement, and climate inaction returns across the season, but the show does not target Christianity or ordinary family life.

Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The show is an original story and does not change established characters, source material, or real historical figures.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
OutKick called the show a “woke mess” and attacked the finale as a lecture about society and AI. The Free Press shared criticism of a heavy-handed feminist message. Small X accounts also attacked the climate message as woke propaganda or nonsense. The available reaction was fringe, with low engagement and no boycott or review-bombing campaign.

Creator track record context
Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij have mild prior links to environmental stories and discussions of feminine power. Cherie Dimaline and Rebecca Roanhorse have strong records of stories about Indigenous survival and past colonial harm. Andrea Sperling and Kristi Reed have strong records of queer representation, while other credited producers have little public activist history. The team therefore has a mixed but notably identity-focused record.
