Person profile
Personal context
David Carter (1952–2020) was a writer, editor, filmmaker, and historian whose career combined commercial screenwriting with sustained work on LGBT history. He authored Stonewall: The Riots That Sparked the Gay Revolution, widely regarded as an authoritative account of the 1969 uprising, and worked with the National Park Service on recognition of the Stonewall site as a national monument. He also wrote biographies of Salvador Dalí and George Santayana, edited Allen Ginsberg interviews, directed a film about Meher Baba, and contributed to documentaries and projects including The Hire. His research, journalism, lectures, oral-history work, and public reputation repeatedly centered gay civil-rights history and preservation, making representation and LGBT political history a substantial part of his career. The broader record also includes conventional, non-activist creative work, and there is no clear evidence of partisan campaigning or a wider culture-war persona.
