Donald Sutherland

Personal context

Summary

Donald Sutherland was a Canadian actor known for a wide-ranging career in films including M.A.S.H., Klute, Ordinary People, JFK, and The Hunger Games. His roles often included authority figures and morally complex outsiders, across war films, political dramas, thrillers, and literary adaptations. His public record includes sustained anti-Vietnam War activism: he helped found the Free Theater Associates with Jane Fonda and performed for military audiences near bases in Southeast Asia. He later said he hoped The Hunger Games would inspire young people toward political change; no public record establishes recurring advocacy on DEI, gender, or LGBTQ causes.
