Person profile
Personal context
John Adams is a director, writer, editor, cinematographer, producer, actor, composer, and co-founder of the family filmmaking collective Wonder Wheel Productions. Working with Toby Poser and their daughters, he has made a largely self-contained independent filmography including Rumblestrips, The Hatred, The Deeper You Dig, Where the Devil Roams, Hell Hole, Mother of Flies, and related shorts and music projects. Adams’ public creative framing repeatedly supports women-centered storytelling: he has discussed deliberately challenging traditional horror roles, placing women in positions of power, and replacing familiar male-dominated imagery with female communities and matrilineal authority. His films also explore unconventional family structures, female violence and agency, gendered expectations, and women resisting victimhood. More recently, the family’s genre work has incorporated themes such as extractive industry and reproductive expectations, but Adams has generally presented these as layered genre ideas rather than partisan activism. His score reflects a sustained representation-first and gender-conscious creative pattern, while recognizing that he does not maintain an independently prominent activist or culture-war persona.
