Izzy lives in a small home in the woods with her mother, who says that a rare illness keeps her away from other people. The lonely teenager spends her days hiking, drawing, and playing heavy music with her mother. After Izzy meets Amber and eats a live worm at a party, she begins to feel a violent hunger and see strange things. The mother then reveals that their family belongs to a hidden line of supernatural hellbenders, and the two women fight over truth, control, and what Izzy will become.
The film gives its strongest woke signal through a female-centered story about power, identity, and growing into a frightening nature. The mother and daughter control the supernatural conflict, while male characters stay outside the main story. The movie treats the mother’s attempt to make Izzy quiet, isolated, and harmless as a failed answer to female strength. These ideas are central to the horror, while the film keeps its focus on family secrets, witchcraft, hunger, and a frightening coming of age.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Hellbender.
Woke representation / casting
The main cast places a mother, daughter, and several girls and women at the center. The female hellbender family line makes the two lead roles fit the story’s supernatural rules. The filmmakers also described the film as a story about powerful women and women taking control. This makes the lead casting an identity statement, but it is not a broad diversity or quota-style cast.
38%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters do not give modern speeches about race, gender, DEI, or activism. Their spoken conflict deals with family secrets, fear, hunger, and control.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The story makes female power and female identity central to the conflict. Izzy grows from an isolated girl into a powerful creature, while her mother tries to hide and control that power. The opening and later scenes repeatedly put women in charge and reject the usual image of women as victims. The film treats Izzy’s choice to accept her nature as a major step toward freedom.
70%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The film briefly treats the idea that a girl should be quiet and harmless as something to reject. Izzy’s wolf-and-lamb song repeats that idea, and the story makes her mother’s control look harmful. The story does not attack modern Western institutions, Christianity, capitalism, or men as a group.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The filmmakers created the hellbender mythology for this movie. The film does not change an established character, canon, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Reddit posts mainly debated the pace, acting, scares, dialogue, and ending. The supplied X check found no anti-woke posts, boycott, or review-bombing.

Creator track record context
Toby Poser has a cached score of 68, Zelda Adams has 56, and John Adams has 52. Their work often centers women’s power, mother-daughter ties, female agency, and women who resist victim roles. This gives the title a moderate creator track record signal that matches its female-centered story.
