Karen Campbell

Personal context

Summary

Scottish novelist Karen Campbell is best known for crime fiction, but she has repeatedly written about social outsiders and identity. She has said these themes run through her books. This Is Where I Am centers on a Somali refugee family and draws on research and conversations with refugees; Campbell described the injustices they faced as angering and inspiring her. Her other novels address Scottish identity and the independence referendum, and the overlooked role of black American soldiers in wartime Italy. This supports a recurring social-issue and representation-focused pattern, though she has no prominent public activist persona.
