Simon Callow is an actor, writer, and director known for stage work and films including Amadeus, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Shakespeare in Love, as well as biographies of Charles Dickens and Orson Welles. His career spans theatre, literary history, and character roles. Callow joined Gay Sweatshop in the 1970s and came out publicly in his 1984 book Being an Actor; he has called coming out his biggest act of activism and praised Gay Sweatshop for affirming gay people’s place in society.
