2022–2025 · Based on 2 seasons through May 13, 2025 ·
Andor is a two-season Disney Plus prequel to Rogue One. It follows Cassian Andor as he changes from a cynical thief into a rebel spy under the Galactic Empire. The series is an ensemble political thriller about how people join the fight against rule by force. It covers prison labor, spy work, Senate politics, the Ghorman Massacre, and the early building of the Rebel Alliance. The full run is twenty-four episodes and ended in May 2025.
Viewers see a multi-ethnic cast and many capable women in power roles such as Dedra Meero, Mon Mothma, Vel, Kleya, and Maarva. Vel and Cinta are an open lesbian couple across both seasons, with relationship talk, a kiss, and Cinta’s death in season two. Much of the talk is about tyranny, oppression, resistance, genocide, and the death of truth rather than race or gender lectures. The story also shows prison factories, occupation, displacement, and a false-flag massacre of civilians. These pieces are clear on screen, yet Cassian’s path remains the center of the show.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Andor.
Woke representation / casting
The cast is multi-ethnic in the usual live-action Star Wars way, with Diego Luna as the Latino lead and a mixed Ferrix community. Many women hold real power on screen, including Dedra Meero, Mon Mothma, Vel, Kleya, and Maarva. Vel and Cinta are also a major on-screen lesbian couple. It is not pure one-of-each casting, but some viewers still see a clear progressive tilt.
36%
Woke political dialogue
The talk is highly political, yet it mostly sounds like classic anti-tyranny and revolution speech. Key moments include Nemik’s manifesto, Maarva’s funeral call to fight the Empire, and Mon Mothma’s Senate speech on genocide and truth. Season two rhetoric can feel like modern progressive political speech even when it stays in-universe. It is not mainly race or gender identity lectures.
42%
Identity-driven story themes
The base story is fascism versus rebellion, which is classic Star Wars. Modern weight comes from the Vel and Cinta lesbian arc, radicalization and manifesto material, and plots about displacement, occupation, and underclass prison labor. The show is not queer-centered overall because Cassian’s arc stays at the middle. That keeps it out of the highest identity-front range.
52%
Western institutional / cultural critique
The story focuses on Imperial surveillance, corporate security, forced prison labor, propaganda, and a false-flag massacre of civilians. Those systems map easily onto progressive critiques of modern state power. Creator comments after season two also link Empire tactics to current U.S. authoritarianism and fascism talk. Ordinary anti-tyranny baseline is still part of classic Star Wars, not mainly anti-faith or anti-family culture-war messaging.
44%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. No identity or DEI race or gender swaps of established heroes.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Some fringe and social voices call the show woke, anti-white male, pro-immigrant, left or Marxist, or too political. At the same time, many Disney-skeptical and anti-woke fans treat Andor as the non-woke high-quality exception. There was no huge culture-war meltdown on the scale of The Acolyte. The backlash stays light to moderate.
26%
Creator track record context
Tony Gilroy is a left-leaning political-thriller writer who frames the series as fascism and has made contemporary U.S. parallels. Franchise origin and casting context sit in a moderate progressive range. Most other directors, producers, and writers score lower. Overall this is moderate left political-drama DNA, not a pure DEI-activist creative slate.
