2022–2025 · Based on 3 seasons through April 17, 2025 ·
Harry Bosch works as a private investigator after leaving the Los Angeles Police Department. He joins lawyer Honey Chandler on cases involving murder, missing people, and powerful criminals. His daughter Maddie becomes a police officer and faces dangers that test her skills and judgment. The show has a dark, serious tone, with family loyalty and the search for justice driving its cases. Maddie and her partner Reina Vasquez take the roles of armed protectors and crime fighters throughout the series. Chandler becomes district attorney in Season 3 and leads major criminal cases. These women gain power through their work, while Harry remains a skilled investigator who often helps them. Season 3 also includes a male victim’s relationship with Councilman Patrick Currey, whose habit of injecting sexual partners with drugs becomes part of Chandler’s case work. These elements sit within a larger story about solving crimes and deciding how far people should go to secure justice.

Identity-driven story themes
Maddie and Vasquez take the traditionally male roles of armed protectors and crime fighters across the series. Chandler gains a major leadership role as district attorney in Season 3. The story supports these women’s careers and gives their decisions lasting importance. Season 3 also confirms a same-sex relationship involving a male victim and Councilman Currey through a drug-related case.

Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Police misconduct and political pressure serve the crime plots rather than a modern activist attack on Western institutions.

Woke character or canon changes
Season 2 gives Honey Chandler the defense-lawyer role held by Mickey Haller in The Crossing. The adaptation transfers a male character’s major story role to an established female character. Connelly explains that the separate television rights prevent Haller from appearing in Legacy. Chandler becomes Bosch’s legal partner in the adapted murder case.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Several small accounts on X accused later seasons of going woke through Maddie’s larger police role. A Reddit viewer feared that Maddie would become a woke heroine idol. A small web review connected the show’s use of “unhoused community” to DEI. These complaints appeared in scattered audience posts and a minor write-up.
