2017–2022 · Based on 4 seasons through April 29, 2022 ·
Marty Byrde is a Chicago money man who works for a Mexican drug cartel. After a deal goes bad, he moves his wife Wendy and their kids to the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. He must wash a huge pile of dirty cash to stay alive. The show is dark, tense, and cold, full of crime, lies, and family stress.
Across four seasons, the story stays about money, power, and a family that keeps doing worse things to survive. Viewers see tough women like Wendy, Ruth, Darlene, and Helen take big control of plots and often beat the men around them. There are also clear gay characters and relationships, mostly in the FBI and local crime world, told in a dark and messy way. These pieces are real on screen, but the main engine is still cartel crime, greed, and family damage, not modern identity lectures or activism.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Ozark.
Woke representation / casting
Later seasons put Maya Miller, a Black FBI money expert, in a clear skilled authority role. Early seasons also include black gay FBI agent Trevor Evans. The Byrdes and many locals are white, which fits rural Missouri, and cartel roles are Hispanic for the drug story. This is a light but real pattern of competent minority pros in visible jobs, not a full quota ensemble.

Identity-driven story themes
Gay plots are audience-visible: Petty’s relationships, Russ Langmore’s secret same-sex life, and later Jim Rattelsdorf. They are dark and criminal, not pride campaigns, but they matter on screen. Over the run, Wendy, Ruth, Darlene, and Helen often drive events and outplay men. The core theme stays crime, cash, and family rot, not race theory or activist identity lessons.

Anti-woke backlash and complaints
A small set of viewers and posts call later seasons feminist or “SJW” because strong women dominate and many men die or look weak. A Medium essay framed season 2 as male-negative female empowerment. Most coverage still treats Ozark as a straight crime hit, so the anti-woke complaint level stays limited.
15%
Creator track record context
Cached context shows mostly low activist history. Fogel’s casting résumé and Bateman’s and Linney’s mild public politics raise the average a little. Dubuque, Williams, Mundy, and most writers and producers score low. Overall mild crew context, not an identity-driven creative team.
