2022 · Based on 1 season, 10 episodes through October 25, 2022 ·
Alan Strauss is a therapist who is grieving his wife and struggling with his distant son. A former patient, Sam Fortner, kidnaps Alan and chains him in a basement. Sam is a serial killer who wants therapy to stop him from killing again. The quiet crime drama follows their tense talks, Alan’s attempts to survive, and Sam’s unstable search for control.
The show gives major space to Alan’s Jewish identity and the split between his Reform family and Ezra’s strict Orthodox life. It shows a rule against women singing before men, Jewish mourning, anti-Jewish images, and Holocaust memories. Sam’s repeated violence also carries a mild warning about male anger, a belief that others owe him respect, and a damaged father-son bond. These ideas shape several episodes, but the show keeps them tied to personal faith, family pain, and one killer instead of a broad political message.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Patient.
Woke representation / casting
Not present. The cast does not show a diversity-first pattern or a public casting message about identity. Alan’s Jewish identity is part of his story and family, not a quota-style choice.
0%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The men talk about murder, grief, family, therapy, and faith. The show does not make a current political argument or use recurring activist language.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
The show repeatedly centers Alan’s Jewish identity, mourning customs, and memories of the Holocaust. Alan’s family conflict grows from Ezra leaving their Reform home for a strict Orthodox community. The story shows a rule against women singing before men and treats the religious split as a source of family pain. The theme matters across the season, but it stays personal and faith-based rather than becoming a broad DEI or activist message.
25%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Sam repeatedly treats insults and loss of control as reasons to hurt people. The story links his violent behavior to an abusive father, weak family bonds, and a belief that others owe him respect. That gives the season a mild critique of male entitlement and violent masculinity. The show does not blame all men or attack capitalism, religion, or Western institutions.
18%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The Patient is an original limited series. It does not change a known character, book canon, or historical figure.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. No sustained anti-woke reaction appeared on X or in major coverage. Audience debate focused on the ending, pacing, acting, Jewish representation, and religious detail, not DEI or left-wing messaging.
0%
Creator track record context
The creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields have no well-documented DEI or identity-activist pattern. Their title interviews say their own Jewish lives and experiences with antisemitism shaped the show’s Jewish material. Director Kevin Bray has the clearest cached diversity and inclusive-story context. Director Gwyneth Horder-Payton has a smaller women-in-the-industry and mentorship signal. The other cached directors and producers have mild or low related context, so the overall signal is limited.
