2022– · Based on 2 seasons through October 18, 2024 ·
The Devil's Hour follows Lucy Chambers, a social worker and mother in modern Britain. She wakes at 3:33 a.m. after visions of death, while her quiet son Isaac sees people and places that others cannot see. A police team links Lucy to a chain of murders and to Gideon Shepherd, a killer who says he remembers many lives. Across two seasons, the story moves through crime scenes, family pain, parallel lives, and violent attempts to change the future. The tone is dark, tense, and full of puzzles.
The clearest audience-visible woke element is the mixed casting in the police and support roles. A South Asian detective and therapist hold important jobs, and a woman leads the investigation in one timeline. The story follows people who remember other lives and try to stop murders while protecting their families. It treats motherhood, guilt, suicide, loyalty, and the danger of changing the future as personal problems, not as a political program.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for The Devil's Hour.
Woke representation / casting
Ravi Dhillon is a major detective played by South Asian actor Nikesh Patel. Ruby Bennett is a recurring therapist played by Meera Syal, and season two adds Sam Boyd as a senior police officer. These visible choices give capable roles to actors from minority backgrounds, but the story does not make their identities part of the conflict or use diversity as a main message.
18%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The dialogue centers on murders, time loops, family, mental illness, and fate. It does not argue for modern activist or identity-politics ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. Lucy's role as a mother and detective serves the mystery and family story. The show does not turn race, gender, sexuality, or group identity into a main cause or message.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. Police, child services, and therapists make mistakes while following the mystery. The show does not present those failures as a modern attack on Western culture, patriarchy, capitalism, or traditional family life.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The Devil's Hour is an original story about Lucy, Gideon, and Isaac. It does not change a known character, canon, or real historical event.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One small X account called the first series “marinaded in DEI” and said skin colour was used like product placement. The account had about zero likes and about 70 views. No repeated anti-woke complaints, boycott, review bomb, or organized campaign was found.
10%
Creator track record context
Tom Moran and the directors have no clear public activist record. Steven Moffat has a stronger political and social context because his work includes feminist-leaning women and support for diverse casting. Sue Vertue and Ken Horn have little direct DEI record, so the overall creator context is mixed but mild.
