2016 · Based on 1 season, 8 episodes through December 3, 2016 ·
Class follows five students and one teacher at Coal Hill Academy in modern East London. A tear in space and time brings monsters to the school, and the Doctor leaves the students to defend Earth. Charlie is a kind but troubled alien prince, while April, Ram, Tanya, and Matteusz face grief, family pain, lost body parts, and growing danger. Miss Quill is a fierce alien soldier who is forced to serve Charlie after a war between their peoples. The show mixes teen romance, dark jokes, horror, and science fiction, and it often moves quickly between school life and large battles.
The strongest woke element is the lead romance between Charlie and Matteusz, a gay alien prince and his Polish boyfriend. Their relationship returns across the season and is treated as normal, while Matteusz's family rejects him and later throws him out. The group also has a Black Nigerian child genius, a Sikh football player who loses a leg, and several prominent women who make key choices and fight powerful enemies. The show includes a Bechdel test joke, a line rejecting gender-specific prom clothes, and a joke about white people. These ideas are visible and sometimes important, but the story is mainly about friendship, grief, alien war, slavery, and moral choices rather than modern political speeches.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Class.
Woke representation / casting
Class gives its main group a strong identity mix. The show centers a gay alien prince and his Polish boyfriend, a Black Nigerian child genius, a Sikh football player, and several women with major power and action roles. The modern East London setting makes the ethnic mix believable, so the score does not rest on race alone. The repeated focus on sexuality, religion, disability, and women as leaders makes the cast feel deliberately representative. The creators and coverage also presented that diversity as a selling point.
64%
Woke political dialogue
Class uses several short lines about modern identity ideas. Tanya jokes about the Bechdel test and later talks about speaking about things other than white people. The students also say prom clothes do not need to be gender specific. Another line says some men will not listen to a woman who is smarter than they are. These moments recur only briefly and do not drive the alien plot.
38%
Identity-driven story themes
Class makes Charlie and Matteusz's gay relationship one of the season's main emotional threads. The couple falls in love, faces family rejection, talks about fear and trust, and remains important in the final fight. The show also makes April's bond with the Shadow Kin king change her power and place in the war. April becomes the ruler of the Shadow Kin and uses a gendered title in a way the story treats as unusual. These identity and role themes matter, but the season still spends most of its time on monsters, grief, friendship, and survival.
61%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Class calls Charlie's control of Quill slavery and shows Quill fighting to regain her free will. The story treats Matteusz's family's rejection of his boyfriend as cruel, while his friends accept the relationship. The students question gender rules around prom clothes and whether men will listen to a smarter woman. Most other power conflict belongs to an alien war, not to a continuing attack on modern Western institutions, Christianity, or capitalism.
28%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. Class adds new students and aliens around the established Coal Hill school. The reviewed season does not change an established Doctor Who character's race, gender, or sexuality.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
One early review said Charlie and Matteusz's romance felt rushed and added for political-correctness points. A small blog described the cast as a list of diversity features and used quota language. Major reviews more often praised the mixed cast and matter-of-fact gay romance. The supplied X research found no anti-woke reaction, so the recorded backlash was small and low reach.
18%
Creator track record context
Patrick Ness has a clear queer-centered writing pattern and has spoken about giving young people diverse heroes. Andy Pryor is known for inclusive casting work, which fits the show's identity-focused ensemble. Steven Moffat and the other producers and directors have mixed or limited public links to identity politics. The overall context gives Class a moderate creator track record signal, not a dominant activist record.
