2018 · Based on 1 season, 5 episodes through March 24, 2018 ·
John Constantine is a hard-drinking expert in dark magic who carries deep guilt from a failed rescue in Newcastle. His old friend Chas asks him to save his eight-year-old daughter, Trish, after a demon steals her soul and leaves her body in a coma. John and Chas travel from London to Los Angeles, where the demon Beroul traps Trish inside his own heart and offers John a cruel deal. The five short episodes use grim humor, bloody horror, child danger, and scenes of dead bodies melting in a demon's pool.
The story centers on guilt, friendship, fatherly love, and the cost of using evil means for a good goal. A female demon healer says that she once slept with John and jokes about a recent threesome with two nature spirits, but the line is brief and does not guide the plot. Chas and Renee are a separated husband and wife whose shared fear for their daughter drives the main conflict. The season ends before John can defeat Beroul, so its main question is whether John can save Trish without repeating the mistake that damned Astra.

Breakdown
These are the editorial factors and ratings behind our score for Constantine: City of Demons.
Woke representation / casting
John refers to a past affair with the female-presenting Nightmare Nurse. The Nightmare Nurse also jokes about a threesome with a dryad and a sylph, so the visible signal is brief.
5%
Woke political dialogue
Not present. The characters discuss demons, guilt, family, magic, and bargains. They do not push modern political or activist ideas.
0%
Identity-driven story themes
Not present. John's sexuality does not guide the plot in these five episodes. The story is about saving Trish and facing guilt over Astra's fate.
0%
Western institutional / cultural critique
Not present. The child-killing cult and demonic deals are horror threats. The story does not turn them into a modern attack on Western culture, men, family, or Christianity.
0%
Woke character or canon changes
Not relevant. The series loosely changes and expands All His Engines, but its changes are not based on race, gender, sexuality, or DEI ideas. John's queer identity already comes from the comics.
0%
Anti-woke backlash and complaints
Not present. Accessible reviews and audience posts focus on gore, faithfulness, pacing, and the cliffhanger. No anti-woke or right-leaning complaint about DEI or identity politics was found.
0%
Creator track record context
Cached scores show a mixed crew. Producer Greg Berlanti scores 72 because LGBTQ representation is central to his wider work, while Sarah Schechter scores 34. Writer J. M. DeMatteis scores 26 and Jamie Delano scores 35, while director Doug Murphy scores 0 and most other listed producers and writers are low. The stronger record comes from a few producers rather than the full team.
